Riding is a highly individualized process for both horse and rider. Shelbie looks at the horse's conformation and takes into consideration any history provided, while evaluating the rider's own knowledge and skill set in order to create an individualized lesson program that is progressive for both horse and rider. She continuously seeks sound solutions through ethical practice.
Shelbie's teachings are rooted in a diverse library of holistic sources including Philippe Karl, Peggy Cummins, Mark Rashid, Ray Hunt, Carolyn Resnick, Nuno Olivera, Tom Dorrance, Linda Tellington-Jones, Alexandеr Nevzorov, Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling, James Shaw, François Baucher, Jean-Claude Racinet, Faverot de Kerbrech, General Decarpentry, Dr Andrew McLean and more.
Shelbie has found in her travels and education that whatever program you are working with, trainer or system, if the work is good, you see the idea and feel of it stretch across the political divide of disciplines, breeds, and awareness. If your work is about upholding the highest respect and love for the individual, you will find the similar essence in other peoples work and mindsets. |
Whether you ride western, jumping, dressage, trail, etc... The basis for any discipline has deep roots in true classical horsemanship: |
What to Expect as a Student
Shelbie starts from the ground up to give a solid understanding of horsemanship through respect of the horse. Individualized training means focusing on the bio mechanics, physiology, and behavior of each horse and rider combination. Shelbie emphasizes rider awareness and developing their intuition and feel in lessons on the ground and on the horse.

Shelbie specializes in:
- Corrective lunging to promote clear ideas of your aids, to improve the horses balance, and to gain a base of support for the horse. By lunging in this manner we set the horse up for success and teach him to think about his surroundings and circumstances, rather than only reacting.
- In-hand work with the halter and bridle. Educating the riders feel of the horse and the mouth from the ground gives more clarity in what you are looking for with your horse. The horse gets to understand what you are trying to communicate and the rider can view the horse easier than on the back. It also introduces body awareness and fine-tunes the language of the aids to the horse through flexions, lateral work, and transitions. Again working to improve the horses balance and bring awareness to natural asymmetry, and their body.
- Progressive work under saddle - we translate what was taught on the lunge and in-hand and continue to explain the aids through gymnastics to access the horse without fighting. This includes contact, leg aids, body position; developing balance for each horse and the task at hand. By gaining this proprioception (the ability to sense stimuli arising within the body regarding position, motion, and equilibrium) the horse will gain balance, straightness, and collection with confidence.

Due to horses natural asymmetry, our horses can become tense, sore, lame, and unhappy which can lead to behavior problems and a tense relationship. By observing your horse's body and mind and applying a systematic approach to your riding, you can correct long standing problems and can maintain a happier, more honest relationship with your horse.
