Shelbie has been a "Teacher in Training" in Philippe Karl's School of Légèreté since 2011, where she began the course in British Columbia and continues today in the Washington Chapter. She and her 21-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare Neira participate in 4 day clinics throughout the year taught by the schools most distinguished teachers. She has passed three of the four exams required to become an official Instructor of Lègéretè and is working towards her fourth and final exam.
Shelbie's first exposure to classical riding was in Mexico, when at the age of 9 she has a lesson with Francisco J Barrena (a student of Nuno Olivera). That lesson stuck with her for years to come.
Shelbie has completed all levels of CHA and has competitive experience in both jumping and dressage. In 2008 she received her HB certification in Pony Club. She has an eventing education through Jim Briggs. Though she grew up in Alaska, during and after high school Shelbie began traveling to the lower 48 for serious training and began working with Kathleen Lindley, who trained with Mark Rashid. Shelbie also worked with James Shaw and Yorkshire Riding School. In 2011 she participated in a year-long apprenticeship at the holistic riding centere "For the Horse" in Chase, BC.
Shelbie's discovery of Philippe Karl's work marked the beginning of a long and ongoing education in equine behavior, anatomy, and a dedication to keep absolute respect for the horse's nature at the core and forefront of every training program. It is through this intense education that Shelbie has been able to form a lasting, true connect with Neira, as well as strengthen her students' relationships with their own horses.
Shelbie is originally from Anchorage, Alaska and returns frequently to the Pacific North West to give clinics.
